The ‘New Mark’ (XVI-XVII) In that year, IWC decided to update its entire Pilot’s collection by giving them a more unified look. The Mark XVI adopted the flieger hands of the Big Pilot’s Watch which were longer and wider in order . After World War II, IWC (and for a short time, Jaeger-LeCoultre) started producing the Mark XI as a simple, no-nonsense pilot's watch for the British Ministry of Defense powered by IWC's vaunted caliber 89. Towards the end of the Mark XI's run, IWC also produced some for commercial sale. I was new to collecting then, and I bought a Mk XV as my very first mechanical watch. By then the Mark XII was already sold out (let alone the Mark XI) and the Mark XV was then the only IWC Pilot watch still being offered. Both the Mark XII and Mark XV have similar aesthetics (IWC skipped the designation Mark XIII and Mark XIV).
At 39mm in diameter and 10.8mm thick, the new Automatic Spitfire isn't the smallest watch in the IWC Pilot's collection, and it's far from the largest. It might be the perfect size. On the wrist, the 39mm Pilot's case wears like a dream. I wouldn't want a modern pilot watch like this to be any smaller.
